Brev fra Cameron Mackintosh LTD (London) etter Les Miserables 2003
Dear Kjell Arne, Birgit, Hans-Gunner and everyone at Bomlo Musikal Laug.
Thank you so much for your hospitality on Friday, and for the chance to see your premiere at Moster Amfi. As I think you will have realised, I had a brilliant time – and thought you had all done a fantastic job bringing LES MISERABLES to life in this amazing open air setting.
All the principals should be immensely proud to be a part of this project, and they all came to their roles with intelligence and skill, which will, I am sure, have inspired the whole ensemble.
The chance to see the piece performed by a company of 100 artists does not come very often, and I will report back to Alain, Claude-Michel and Cameron my impressions – these were of a sense of commitment, a high level of skill, an enormous understanding of the need for discipline and team work to make a project work in that vast open arena, and a true sense of theatre (sometimes witty, sometimes emotional and sometimes truly dangerous) which held the capacity audience spellbound till 1am.
All the technical & creative team had clearly created a setting in which this company could do their best work – and they were supported by an orchestra who also rose to the challenge of this immense score, with real skill.
I hope to be privileged to have the chance to see other performances by your company in Moster Amfi, and to see many of the principals (and I hope some of the ensemble) playing these roles and other roles elsewhere in Norway over the coming years.
And now I want your advice – I bought the Lonely Planet guide for Scandinavia yesterday and it doesn’t have a mention of Bomlo. Should I complain to them – or would you like me to keep this idyllic island paradise a secret from the general tourists. Yesterday morning I was privileged to go up to Brandasund and Skjeret and to feel the stillness and power of your islands. If you want it kept secret, I will completely understand – but I will be telling a few chosen people to visit your islands, and your productions in the future.
Thank you for a truly special chance to see what you have achieved. I will long remember the visit – and return again soon.
All good wishes
Chris Grady
